A 10-inch powered speaker makes sense when portability matters or when you're planning to use a subwoofer for the lowest frequencies.
The PreSonus AIR10 uses a 10-inch woofer with a 2-inch voice coil and a 1-inch compression driver. PreSonus AIR12 vs. JBL EON712 vs. Mackie Thump212
Moving to a 12-inch woofer gives you more low-frequency capability, making these models more attractive when you're running the speakers without a subwoofer.
The PreSonus AIR12 uses a 12-inch woofer with a 2.5-inch voice coil and a larger 1.35-inch high-frequency compression driver. As with the EON710, JBL provides substantial onboard processing. Automatic Feedback Suppression, ducking, delay, parametric EQ, Bluetooth streaming, and app control are all built in.

At 27.6 pounds, the Thump212 is also surprisingly light for a 12-inch powered speaker.
What the Specification Sheet Doesn't Tell You
This is where powered-speaker comparisons can get misleading.
If you sort these six speakers strictly by maximum SPL or peak amplifier wattage, the PreSonus AIR models don't come out on top. JBL and Mackie publish higher numbers.
But that's not the same thing as saying one speaker sounds better.
A PA speaker has to reproduce vocals and instruments clearly, maintain that clarity as volume increases, provide appropriate coverage for the room, and integrate with the rest of your system. A speaker that's going into a coffee shop twice a month has different requirements from one covering a school gym or running vocals over a loud drummer.
There are also practical differences that don't show up in the wattage number.
The AIR series' dual-position pole socket, for example, lets you mount the speaker straight ahead or angle it downward 7.5 degrees. That can be useful when the speakers are elevated above the audience. The AIR10 and AIR12 also include M10 suspension points for permanent or semi-permanent installations.
DSP: Simple Controls or More Options?
This may be the biggest philosophical difference between these speaker families.
PreSonus AIR keeps DSP relatively simple. You choose the preset that matches what the speaker is doing, make adjustments from the rear LCD, and get to work.
JBL EON700 gives you considerably more processing and wireless control. For someone who wants to make detailed adjustments from a phone or use features such as automatic feedback suppression and speaker delay without additional processing equipment, that's useful.
Mackie Thump sits somewhere else. The standard Thump210 and Thump212 emphasize quick tools such as Feedback Eliminator and Music Ducking rather than extensive app-based control. If you want Bluetooth and wireless control in the Thump family, you'd need to look at the XT versions instead.
There isn't one correct approach. If your speaker is part of a larger system with a dedicated mixer handling EQ and processing, you may not need extensive DSP inside every cabinet.
10-Inch or 12-Inch?
For many customers, this decision matters more than the brand name.
A 10-inch powered speaker is worth considering when you're building a portable vocal PA, using the system primarily for speech, using separate subwoofers, or regularly carrying your equipment in and out of venues.
A 12-inch powered speaker makes more sense when you need additional low-frequency output from the main speakers themselves. That's useful for full-band reinforcement, keyboards, recorded music, DJs, and situations where adding a subwoofer isn't practical.
That doesn't mean a 12-inch speaker automatically sounds better. It means it handles a different part of the job.
For example, a pair of AIR10s with a properly matched subwoofer can make more sense than two AIR12s when you want a compact system but still need substantial low end.
So, Which One Should You Buy?
The JBL EON710 and EON712 stand out if you specifically want Bluetooth, app control, wide horizontal coverage, and more extensive onboard DSP.
The Mackie Thump210 and Thump212 offer high published SPL figures, relatively light cabinets, built-in feedback elimination, and music ducking. They're worth considering when maximum output for the size and simple automatic tools are high on your list.
The PreSonus AIR10 and AIR12 take a more straightforward approach. They give you useful DSP presets, flexible analog inputs, floor-monitor capability, multiple mounting options, and controls that don't require an app.

That's one reason we like them for practical PA systems.
For a singer-songwriter, rehearsal space, classroom, church, presentation system, or smaller live-sound setup, the AIR10 can cover a lot of ground without taking up much room.
When you need more low end from the cabinet itself, the AIR12 gives you the same basic operating approach with a 12-inch woofer and higher maximum output.
